Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that reading for pleasure boosts reading skills, wellbeing, and confidence. However, 1 in 7 state primary schools in the UK doesn’t have a library or dedicated reading space. The lack of access to books highlights the greater need for investment in school libraries.
We’re thrilled to become part of the Libraires for Primaries campaign, an impactful literacy initiative co-founded by the National Literacy Trust and Penguin Books in 2021. Our shared aim is to make sure that every primary school in the UK have its own library by 2028.
Reading for pleasure isn’t just fun; it gives children from underserved communities the tools they need to grow and succeed in school and beyond. Libraries for Primaries helps reduce inequalities by offering schools library spaces, diverse book collections, teacher training, and literacy resources.
Our funding will help one primary school in Tower Hamlets set up and manage its own library. It goes beyond just the physical books and shelves, as the library will also provide training and support for educators, ensuring that it becomes central to the learning experience and has a lasting impact.
Through the Libraries for Primaries campaign, we aim to inspire the next generation of Londoners to experience the benefits of reading for pleasure. To learn more about the campaign, visit the National Literacy Trust’s website.
