Dramatic Science @ the Half Moon Theatre

The Aldgate and Allhallows Foundation is a long-term supporter of The Half Moon Theatre, based in Limehouse. The Half Moon has a long history of providing engaging and educational theatre experiences for young people and has been a fixture of the East End community for over 40 years.

The theatre has a philosophy of bringing low-cost theatre to ‘new’ audiences, their productions are renowned for entertaining and inspiring generations of children and families in Tower Hamlets.

As well as providing affordable theatre for their community, The Half Moon is invested in providing creative learning programmes including curriculum-focused activity, after-school and out-of-school workshops and initiatives to support young people’s personal and social development.

After the success of The Half Moons Dramatic maths project, they turned their attention to science and in September, funded by a grant from the Aldgate and All Hallows Foundation, they kicked off a new pilot – Dramatic Science.

Working with primary school pupils from across, Tower Hamlets, The Half Moon, engages with both pupils and teachers and teaches them an alternative approach to studying, appreciating and understanding science in the classroom.

The project covers subjects in the KS2 curriculum and includes Sound, Electricity, Earth and Space.

“I wanted to say thank you so much for everything that Half Moon has done for our learners. You have truly, tangibly made a difference in their education, their creativity and their aspirations. I hope the theatre continues to be successful in supporting the local community; I think you are doing incredible work…thank you for working with us with the attitude of ‘anything is possible’.” Tower Hamlets College Drama Teacher

As we approach the end of the school year, the project is seeing positive results, this latest project is a demonstration of the transformative power of theatre and the creative potential of young people.

We’re proud to see Dramatic Science in action and hope the project continues to deliver fantastic results for the young people in Tower Hamlets.
